Fungi and lichens, as non-timber forest products, necessitate additional research on their bio-prospecting. Many of these organisms are not only edible, but also play a crucial role in enhancing food security and providing medicinal benefits during extreme climate change events. Despite being classified among lower plants, they have not received as much attention in traditional plant studies compared to other groups, despite their well-documented relationship with humans and interactions with the environment throughout history. Given the countless new species yet to be collected and described, there is a significant need for further research. It is imperative that more studies are directed towards investigating their evolution, genomics, and practical applications.
