April Fool Day History

April Fools' Day, celebrated on April 1st each year, has uncertain origins, but it's believed to have roots in various cultural traditions dating back centuries.

One theory suggests it began in France in the late 16th century when King Charles IX adopted the Gregorian calendar, moving New Year's Day from late March to January 1st. Those who continued to celebrate during the old New Year's week (ending on April 1st) were ridiculed as "April fools."

Over time, the tradition of playing pranks and spreading hoaxes on April 1st evolved into the modern-day April Fools' Day observed worldwide, where people play practical jokes on each other with a spirit of good-natured fun.
